And the Best Man Wins….Lalit Bhasin

It is difficult to write on a person like Dr. Lalit Bhasin, a man of so many accomplishments because one is afraid to miss a few. He started his law practice in 1962 and has developed Bhasin & Co. as one of the largest law firms in North India. In his flourishing law career of over 54 years, he has held many prestigious positions and has been honoured with several awards. His office walls are crowded with Certificates of Honor and the cabinets overflow with awards.

His leadership skills were recognized very early. At the age of 33, he became the youngest Chairman of the Bar Council of Delhi. He enjoys the respect of his peers, which is evident from his being appointed the President (repeatedly), of the Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF), since its inception in 1999. He has worked hard to put the Indian legal profession on the world map. He became the Secretary General of the International Bar Association (IBA). He further went on to become the President of the Inter Pacific Bar Association (IPBA). It is his vision to see the Indian law firms compete with the best in the world.

He has served in many capacities. He has been the Chairman, Film Certification Appellate Tribunal of India, and served as the Regional President, Indo-American Chamber of Commerce. Being a strong believer in Alternate Dispute Resolution, he currently chairs the CIArb (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators), India Chapter. Mr. Bhasin has a deep passion for giving back to society and in his pro bono, voluntary and non-legal role he was elected as the Chairman, Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) by the Ministry of Commerce in 2009.

He was awarded the Doctor of Laws (LL.D.) Honoris Causa by Jaipur University in 2013. He was awarded the Honorary Membership of the IBA in Melbourne in 1994 for his outstanding service to the legal profession. He was awarded the Plaque of Honor by the Prime Minister of India in 2002 for his outstanding contribution to the Rule of Law. In 2007, the President of India presented the National Law Day Award to Mr. Bhasin for his “Outstanding Contribution to the Development of the Legal Profession in India and for his deep involvement and engagement in the maintenance of the highest standards at the Bar”.

Being a lawyer of great national and international repute, it was not surprising in the least, that Mr. Bhasin has been elected as the President of the Bar Association of India in a landslide victory on 11th September, 2016, with more than 88% of the votes of the Governing Council.

Dr. Lalit Bhasin said, “It is a unique honour for me to be elected to this prestigious position, particularly, keeping in view that my predecessors have been such illustrious names as Mr. M.C Setalvad, Mr. C.K Daphtary, Mr. Fali Nariman and Mr. Anil Divan.”
