Subway ‘footlong’: denied

Subway is the biggest fast food chain in the world in terms of number of outlets, building its reputation on its large and inexpensive subs. So it’s no surprise that it attempted to copyright the term ‘footlong’ for its largest and most famous sandwich.
However, other smaller chains appealed and in 2013 the trademark was thrown out when a judge deemed the term ‘footlong’ to be too widely used in the food and restaurant industry to justify a copyright for Subway.
