In early 2017, it looked like the New England Patriots could do no wrong in the NFL. They had won 18 out of 19 games, with only the Super Bowl final standing in their way to a perfect season. Then the team’s owners Kraft Group took the controversial step of patenting the slogans “19-0” and “Perfect Season”. The request was approved in February and merchandise was swiftly produced.
It was an interesting decision by the Pats, as in 2006’s Super Bowl XLII they had been in the same position, printed all the “19-0” merchandise, only to lose to the New York Giants. Luckily for them, this time it paid off and the Pats got their perfect season and their copyright.
