Thakbast maps and thak khasra:

A regular survey of a district is preceded by a preliminary measurement by a amin who lays down on a rough map the locality, without any guarantee of scientific accuracy, and enters in a register particulars regarding the plots gathered from the people. The map is called thakbast map, and the register the thak khasra. [Jagdeo Narain Singh v. Baldeo Singh, 1922 PC 272].
The word ‘thak’ literally means a small boundary demarcation mark. [Shasi Bhusan Banerji v. Ramjas Agarwala, 83 IC 205]. The thak survey is conducted by the Settlement Officer before the scientific work of the revenue surveyor is commenced. [Section 36, Evidence Act, 1872]
