ACP Surinderjeet Kaur
A protective shield for women in distress
There are many legal provisions to safeguard the women and children from the clutches of traffickers, still a large number of women, especially the minor girls are trafficked on recurring basis from various states. Their presence at brothels is a proof in itself. Non-implementation of relevant laws and lack of will on part of the police personnel is one such factor behind proliferation of the crime of trafficking.
However, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Surinderjeet Kaur is a police officer, who does not use a long stick or gun to prevent the menace of human trafficking; she rather uses the provisions of law with an inner urge and fire in the belly to make sure that the helpless humans are rescued from the hard shackles of traffickers. ACP Surinderjeet Kaur is highly skilled in not letting the traffickers go scot-free.
Today, she is an ACP, but she is still remembered for her stint as Station House Officer (SHO) of Kamla Market police station, under whose jurisdiction comes capital’s red-light area of G.B. Road. There she rescued over 100 helpless women from the clutches of brothel owners and traffickers. This could have been possible after she strategically sent decoy customers to gather the intelligence of handlers’ modus-operandi. She diligently sensitized her subordinate staff to tackle this menace and trained them about all the legal provisions for making a strong case against the culprits of human trafficking.
It may be interesting to point out that Surinderjeet Kaur had been instrumental on personal level to help some of the rescued women in getting married. Her constant sincere efforts led to win the Kamla Market police station the ‘Best Police Station Award’ out of 182 police stations in Delhi. She herself received the Police Medal for Meritorious Service from the President of India in 2012. After her transfer to special police unit for women and children, she continued to work for vulnerable women and children till 2014.
At present, Surinderjeet Kaur is posted at ACP (Crime Against Women) cell at Sriniwaspuri, constantly providing helping hand to women suffering from domestic violence and dowry demands. Her commendable contribution is that instead of doing haste in registering cases, she solves many disputes through humane approach of counseling. Many disputing spouses are today living a peaceful life due to her personal intervention by resolving the disputes through counseling following the process of assisting and guiding the parties to resolve their inter-personal, family, social and psychological problems.
In addition to the above, ACP Surinderjeet Kaur has constituted a very strong self-defence team. With the help of this team, she has so far trained around 30,000 girls from various schools, colleges of South-East district for protection against street crimes like snatching and eve-teasing, etc. ACP Surinderjeet Kaur has also been instrumental in rescuing many child-labourers from factories, for which she has been many times rewarded by NGOs.
