Dear Readers,

Age of consent is legal concept specifically aimed at protecting the minors from getting into the trap of the unscrupulous adults who might use them for their sexual pleasure. All of a sudden a news report brought the issue of age of consent forth suggesting that a reduction in the age was being thought of. Even more puzzling wa the fact that the only purpose cited for the reduction was to bring it at par with the age of consent in certain western countries.

Surely, that was not a good enough reason to touch such a sensitive issue with a possible adverse impact on the sexual, social and psychological health of our children. In today's fast changing times when the youngsters are flooded with all kinds of information and are exposed to the not-so-kind realities of the world a little too early in life, a mindless copying the West might result in disastrous consequences.

In any society sexual conduct is a culturally loaded aspect and any attempt on the part of the lawmakers to impose what then might consider a 'progressive' approadch is liekly to meet stiff resistance. The age of consent in India as of now is 16 years, which is not particularly high by any stretch of imagination. There is no reason why it should be meddled with.
